Bring Back Our Building

Inadequate infrastructure has been one of the major reasons why staffs of various higher institutions of learning in Nigeria embark on strike. Most of these reasons have been ascribed to poor funding of education in Nigeria. One of the institutions to have felt this impact is the Polytechnic, Ibadan.

In one of the recent publications released by the Press Council in an interview featuring the Deputy Rector of the institution where it was revealed that the management of the institution is embarking on various projects to solve these menace. In his words, “The construction of two modern 500-capacity lecture theatres, TETFUND additional drawing studio, 500-capacity lecture theatre for both engineering and environmental students. 1981 set of Accountancy Alumni Association will be laying a foundation of another 1000-capacity lecture theatre among others”. It’s been over 12 years (December, 2005-2018) that the foundation laying of the Faculty of Science lecture theatre was performed by the Governor of Ekiti state, Dr. Peter Ayodele Fayose. The building foundation was laid to ease the students’ convenience in class but it’s disheartening that the building has been tagged uncompleted building even by the students on campus. The building remained hidden and bushy and it’s seemingly becoming forgotten. It has since been abandoned and its purpose is not specifically known to the students, though it was planned to be a lecture theatre.

There are several risks attached to the negligent act turned towards the building; this building may be used as hideouts for criminal acts, at this time the building may now be weakened and can lead to its collapse, since as an uncompleted building, it is prone to such.

We therefore tender our plea to the management of the institution to take a step to “revive the dying building”.
