ASUP Set To Commence Nationwide Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has declared that it would begin an indefinite strike from Wednesday, 12th December.

The polytechnic lecturers will join their university colleagues who have been on strike for a month over the failure of the government to fulfil the content of the Memorandum of Action it signed with the union in 2017.

Giving reasons for the decision in an interview with PREMIUM TIMES on Wednesday morning, the National President of ASUP, Usman Dutse, said the federal government had failed to meet the demands of the Polytechnic lecturers.

Prior to this impending strike, the union had on 2nd October issued a 21 day ultimatum to the government before it extended it to November but did not eventually go strike.
Giving an update on the strike today, Dutse said the proposed strike would be “total and indefinite”.

His words: “This further emphasises the resolution of the 93rd National Executive Council meeting reached at the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos last week,” he said. [adinserter name=”Block 3″][adinserter name=”Block 2″]
“Government has failed to implement and fulfil agreements it reached with the union as contained in the memorandum of understanding signed,” he said.
In a related development, the meeting between the ASUU leadership and Federal Government ended in a deadlock on Tuesday night, meaning the industrial action the union embarked on one month ago lingers on.
