ASUP Wants More Government Funding In Polytechnics

The national president of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP) has called on the federal government to step up funding of polytechnic education for technological advancement.

Mr. Yusuf Dutse who made the plea at the recent national conference of ASUP held in Nasarawa with the theme, “Economic recession, corruption and the challenges of good governance in Nigeria: The role of tertiary education”, lamented that polytechnic education get the lowest funding in tertiary institutions in the country.

However, he opined that if the sector is properly funded, it would boost technological advancement in the country.

“Our equipment are obsolete because of poor funding, the government need to update and initiate policies that will fix the polytechnic with global practice”, Dutse said.

Similarly, the ASUP chairman in the state, Mr. Useni Paul called on the state government to pay retirees of tertiary institutions their gratuity and pension.

On his part, the Rector of the host polytechnic, Dr. Silas Gyer expressed concern over the increased spate of corruption in the institution.

He said, “I see and get reports on corruption on daily basis. Some of my staffs are on suspension while others are being investigated.”
