Challenges Facing PolyIBADAN Students Discussed By Students’ Leaders

The Students’ Representatives championed by the Students’ Union met to discuss the challenges facing the students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan at 250 Capacity, NLT on Wed., 12th June, 2019.

According to them, despite the security measures laid down to curb terrorism and riot in the school, the security is still not in place. They observed that Students are not properly checked into the school at the entrance. Also, most security operatives just glanced through to check if the identity cards have passports and names, and not entirely doing the cross-check, which implies someone randomly can forge a receipt to come on campus and perpetrate atrocious acts.

In the same vein, the issue of the hostel fee was raised, where many students who paid the hostel fee in the first semester but couldn’t obtain hostel, and their fee is yet to be refunded. Also similar to the hostel issue were the hostels not having Hall Management Committee, an example is Orisun Hall of Residence, thereby leading to the residents of the hostels not having a voice that speaks for them.

Among the issues raised was the Computer Based Test which was ineffective as many students, despite paying school fees were unable to partake in the test. A case of Science Laboratory Technology department was raised which the CBT was among the sole reasons of mass failure in the cases where students were unable to take test despite being registered, and no make up test was done in that regard.

The issue of registration and result were as well raised, where students were unable to complete their registration due to inability to print their course form. This has hindered students from obtaining clearance slip for examination. Also delay in the result of students have left students in a state of quandary as most students are unaware of the courses they are retaking.

Also raised was the Reparation fee paid by the students, that despite the gross number of students that have paid, there have not been any changes in the reparation of the damaged properties. Also, that will the students whose belonging were stolen also be beneficiary of this relation fee?

Other issues tabled were the Wi-Fi unavailability to students, lack of of toilets within the class environments for students, Insurance fee, the delayment in attending to patients at the medical centre, stigma and discrimination of the South and North, scraping the payment of unnecessary fees like five subject notebook, neckmesh and the likes, ID cards and extortion from the departments and faculties alike.

The meeting was brought to an end with the Students’ Union Government making a pledge to proffer solution to the issues raised by tabling this to the Management of the institution.
